Jewellery Care

Jewellery should be carefully stored. Care should be taken to protect it from knocks, chemicals, extreme temperatures & sunlight. Jewellery when treated with respect will look fabulous and last for many years.

Over time, sterling silver jewellery often develops a dark patina. It is a natural response to being exposed to our environment, worn on the body and well loved. You can use a treated polishing cloth as found at your local jewelers.

Do not wear jewellery when in the swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna/steam room or while bathing or showering. Chlorine, detergents, oils & perfumes can all cause tarnishing or damage to the metals and any organic stones/materials.

There are certain products that you can purchase that can be used specifically for cleaning costume jewellery. Read labels to be sure that the product doesn’t contain ammonia, vinegar, acid or alcohol. These substances can be too harsh for delicate materials. If your piece contains pearls or semi-precious stones, be sure that the cleaner indicates that it will not harm them.

  • Remove jewellery when doing household tasks.
  • When undressing, remove jewellery items first, this will help insure that necklaces, brooches, bracelets, and earrings don’t get caught on your clothes and get damaged.
  • Make-up, perfume & hairspray all contain chemicals which may damage or tarnish your jewellery. Do this before you put on your jewellery.
  • Wipe jewellery clean with a soft cloth after each wear to remove make up & oils (from skin).
  • Pearls and other organic gemstones: It’s best to wipe this type of jewelry with a soft, lint-free cloth as soon as you take them off.
  • Store each piece of jewellery separately. If possible, place individual pieces in either a cloth pouch, or in a jewellery case with separate compartments.
  • Hang your necklaces in a safe place or coil chains gently to prevent damage in storage.
  • Avoid exposure to detergents, bleaches, baking soda, and ammonia-based products.
  • Avoid placing excess strain on necklaces, chains or bracelets.
  • Some designs may contain a jeweller’s glue so avoid storing pieces in direct sunlight or extreme heat or cold. All patina finishes are not permanent and must not be polished with cloths as this will wear away the surface area uncovering the original metals colour underneath. With regular wear oxidisations and natural patinas will fade off in time, but can always be reapplied by me or by your local jeweller.
