About Mala Beads:
Mala Beads date back to at least the 16th century BC, and are the origin of beads used in other religions and cultures, such as prayer rosary and worry beads.Â
Mala Beads were developed to keep the mind focused during the practice of meditation. They are considered sacred mediums for peace and enlightenment and service as a reminder of the divinity within oneself.
They usually consist of 108 beads, sometimes with an added spacer bead and with a larger 109th guru bead connecting the ends, followed by a tassel.
Mala Beads can be used to help attain guidance and protection in daily life, and for prayer, meditation and self-reflection. They also can simply be worn as a beautiful necklace or as a bracelet by wrapping them around the wrist.Â
Using Mala Beads to Meditate:Â
Mala beads are used to keep count of the repetitions in reciting or chanting a mantra allowing one to focus on the sound of the mantra rather than on counting the repetitions.Â
Start from a bead beside the guru bead, moving from bead to bead turning the thumb around each, until arriving at the bead at the other side of the guru bead.
